Canonbury apartment
This open-plan apartment is situated on the top floor of a building in Canonbury, London. It features an exposed wooden roof structure, large traditional sash windows, and two skylights. With a generous 3.5m ceiling height and an open layout, the space offers excellent potential for various conversion options. Additionally, there is access to a flat roof above the kitchen, which could be developed into a small rooftop garden, further enhancing the apartment’s appeal. To make the most of this flexibility, we present two design approaches that are well-suited to the characteristics of the space.
Here are our two proposals:
A: The Red Boxes
B: Divided apartment: Compact Living

A: THE RED BOXES
69.5m2
TWO ELEVATED RED BOXES ARE DESIGNED TO FUNCTION AS BOTH A BED (1) AND A WORKSPACE (2), ENHANCING THE VERSATILITY OF THE SPACE. THIS DESIGN KEEPS THE REMAINING AREA OPEN AND FLEXIBLE. FOR ADDED PRIVACY OR DIVISION, TWO FULL-HEIGHT CURTAINS CAN BE USED. THE OPEN LAYOUT ALLOWS FOR VERSATILE USE OF THE APARTMENT. (EXISTING AREA: 63.5M²; RED BOXES: 6M² TOTAL)
IN THIS CONCEPT, THE ORIGINAL APARTMENT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SMALLER UNITS. THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF EACH APARTMENT ARE EFFICIENTLY ORGANISED, MAXIMISING THE OPEN LIVING AREAS FOR VERSATILE USES SUCH AS A DINING ROOM, WORKSPACE, OR STUDIO. BOTH APARTMENTS UTILIZE THE EXISTING 3.5M CEILING HEIGHT TO CREATE A SMALL MEZZANINE ABOVE THE KITCHEN AND CORRIDOR AREAS. THE MEZZANINE IN THE STUDIO SERVES AS A SLEEPING AREA, WHILE IN THE ONE-BEDROOM APARTMENT, IT PROVIDES ADDITIONAL STORAGE SPACE.
