Concept for modular residential building

“Insulae Urbanae” - “Urban Islands” is our concept project for modular residential buildings. The proposal explores creative ways of designing an apartment building through modular units arranged in various combinations. This represents the idea of grouping houses together in one building allowing autonomy within a small community. Our aim is to create apartments with flexible spaces allowing for interesting and less ordinary ways of living. In aid of that is the simple rectangular grid of the structure, enabling for various organisation of the spaces. This way the apartments achieve modular combinations all different from each other, providing variety whilst still keeping a rational construction method. In the exemplary model below we’ve explored an assembly of apartments with 3 to 6 modules, and apartments spanning between one, two or three storeys.

The facade treatment is achieved through a surrounding balcony - a continuous fabric along the entire external facade of the building, providing a green wall aspect and also a terrace for each apartment.

Apartment layout study

Here we explore the layout of an apartment of 6 modules (units), spanning across three levels. It contains a kitchen/dining area, living room, an office and two bedrooms with en-suite. In line with the building strategy each room takes one building unit.
